Marion has taken her songwriting and singing skills to a new level on "Early." She has fine-tuned her sound, in no small part due to the talents of her exceptional back-up band, which includes Vancouver musicians Chris Warunki (drums), Bruno Hubert (piano), and Sean Cronin (bass), with special appearances by Dave Cormin (electric guitar and keys), Karen Graves (saxophone) and Joe Waters (fiddle). "Early" was produced by Tyler Pearson at DCM Studios, and engineered and mastered by Brandon Cherrington.

Flowers in the River
[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

I’m gonna go and see him
Because I miss him so
He says he’ll meet me by the river
And then he has to go
He’s on his way to someplace
But he can’t tell me where
He's bringing me some flowers
And I don’t even care

River take my flowers
To the place where rivers go
Take away the flowers that he gave me
And if he really loves me
Please tell him to come home
Flowers in the river for my baby

We’re gonna have a baby
Ten fingers and ten toes
And he won’t even be around
To watch our baby grow
My baby’s mamma loves her
But her daddy don’t
Some girls would grow up empty
But my baby won’t

Great big sky above me
Cold dark earth below
And me here in the middle
with either way to go
the only thing for certain
is I miss him every day
He was my best companion
Until he went away

People think that girls like me
Are trouble from the start
But I never knew no trouble
‘til I opened up my heart

Hills Afire
[listen]

lyrics by Marion Walsh
music by Marion Walsh and Tyler Pearson

There’s fire in these hills
And why it’s burning still,
I’ll never know
The trees are crying,
yeah I can hear them crying
These are the only hills I know

I see you in these hills
I see you and I know I cannot stay
And even though you’re gone, long gone
The fire will not burn away

Burning are the mountains, burning are the hills
Burning is my heart because I love you still
And I will not return here
until the fire burns away
I will not return until I know I’ll stay
Hills afire

See the colors in these hills
In autumn afternoons when the shadows fall
See the light, the way it glows, it is October now
Do you remember me at all?

I left here in the morning
I kissed you as you slept, the sun was rising gold
And then I walked away from all this glory
With only memories to hold

Flames burn to ashes, ashes turn to dust
I’m leaving now because I know I must
And I will not return here until the fire burns away
I will not return until I know I’ll stay
Hills afire

See the colors in these hills
And why it’s burning still
the trees are crying, yeah,
I can hear them crying,
These are the only hills
Hills afire
Hills afire
Hills afire

Sweet and Wonderful
[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

You’re my sweet and wonderful
Love you all the time
When you’re in my neighborhood
The sun’s gonna shine, shine, shine
I don’t give a damn what the neighbors say
You can bring your sweet old self my way

I love you, sweet wild wonderful
From the bottom to the top
Like a planet going round the sun
I’m never gonna stop, stop, stop
I don’t care if it shows
I’m gonna sing this song
‘til the whole world knows

Don’t mind me if I blush
But it makes me crazy when we touch
When we touch my heart goes crazy
Something tells me that I love you baby

You love me like it matters,
You love me like you care
You make me feel beautiful
No matter what I wear
You’re making my rules come undone
But I don’t mind, let’s have some fun
When we touch my heart goes crazy
Something tells me that I love you baby
I love you baby
I love you baby

So What If I Dream?
[listen]

lyrics by Marion Walsh
music by Marion Walsh and Tyler Pearson

In my imagination I am happy
In my imagination I am free
No one ever wants anything from me

In my imagination I am the squeaky wheel
I do what I want, not what I should
In my wildest dreams
I am completely understood

People say I must be crazy
Others think I must be lazy
Dreaming up the things I never do
But even if I never do them
What’s it matter to them
You gotta have your dreams
to get you through

So what if I dream?
So what if I dream?
So what if I dream?
Dreaming is free

In my dreams the snow stays white forever
It’s always breezy, and I’m in the sun
I live on the edge of a canyon,
and everything I do is fun

In my fantasies, there’s no confusion
I am exactly who I want to be
Anything goes! in my reveries

Some people want to drag me down
Keep me in their tiny town
Where all that matters is what you can see
They should listen to their dreams
Life is more than what it seems
I don’t have to see it to believe

In my head I’m never disappointed
Everything is as good as it seems
You can mess with my life,
but you can’t touch my dreams

Sing Your Blues Away
[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

Mother sister daughter wife
Where are you going with your life?
Anything you can do is inside of you
Make up your mind you’re running out of time

Father brother uncle son
Can you see the damage done
Anything you want you must feel for it to be real
If it’s understanding you must find I will give you mine

This may not be your night, this may not be your day
But you’ll be alright just sing your blues away

What’s the matter sister what’s the matter friend
Have your dreams come to an end
If you are feeling blue there is only one thing to do
Sing yourself a song and nothing can go wrong

A Simple Life for a Simple Girl
[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

I love my dogs and my dogs love me
We go walking in the woods, we three
Rain or sun, mud or snow,
nothings’ gonna stop us if we wanna go
It’s a simple life, don’t you know

Got me a mom, got me a dad,
The best damn parents a girl could ever have
The two of them made the one of me
and the three of us make a family
It’s a simple life, can’t you see

I once was small, but now I’m grown
And I don’t mind my time alone
Got my dogs, my guitar
We don’t have to travel far
We’ve got enough, right where we are

It’s a simple life for a simple girl
In a big old complicated world
And I’m trying to make my way
Along this long and rocky road
Oh my my my, yes indeed,
I’ve got everything I need
Got my friends and my family,
Got my dogs and I got me

I’ve got no use for email letters
Pen and paper suits me better
If I need to talk, I’ll use the phone
Or I’ll stop by if I know you’re home
There’s always time when you live alone
When I wake up I got no plan,
I take a look at where I am
I say a prayer, I check the sky
Then we go out, my dogs and I
It’s a pretty good life, you ought to try

This song’s got no point, it don’t mean nothing
That’s just what I am discussing
I made it up, and now I sing it
Though there really ain’t no meaning in it
It’s a simple song for a simple girl
In a big old complicated world

Early
[listen]

lyrics by Marion Walsh
music by Marion Walsh and Tyler Pearson

It’s okay to wake me up early
We’ll be the first to see the day
We’ll watch the sky make its arrangement
And hear what the earth has to say
Don’t let me sleep in

Be sure to wake me up early
I’ll watch our boy as he sleeps
Behind those closed eyes are adventures
And dreams only little boys keep
Don’t let me sleep in

If love could show up in the mirror
It would look just like our baby’s face
I can’t believe that we made her
This love is a beautiful place
Don’t let me sleep in

If you should forget to wake me
I’ll sleep ‘til the day says hello
But I’ll miss the sunrise and the look in your eyes
And the kiss that I get when you go
Don’t let me sleep in

I don’t want to sleep in
I love your voice in the morning
the way that you whisper my name
so gentle and slow, like newfallen snow
and then you repeat it again

Sometimes a Girl’s
Gotta Put Herself First

[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

Wake up, I’ve got something to say
I love you but I have to go away
I’ll be back, I don’t know when
I know you might not be here then
I might lose you, and that hurts
But sometimes a girl’s gotta put herself first

Things are great, things are good
But lately I’m not feeling the way that I should
Its like the clothes I’m wearing are just too small
It’s nothing personal, I’m just growing, that’s all
I might lose you, and you know that hurts
But sometimes a girl’s gotta put herself first

It’s got nothing to do with you
A girl’s gotta do what she’s gotta do
So treat me right or treat me wrong
I’m leaving you baby, and this is my song

Well I might be crazy, but I think I’m not
I’m giving this leaving all that I’ve got
I might be lonely, I might get lost
But I’ve gotta grow, no matter the cost
I might lose you, and you know that hurts
But sometimes a girl’s gotta put herself first

Wake up, I’ve got something to say
I love you but I have to go away
I’ll be back, I don’t know when
I know you might not be here then
I might lose you, and you know that hurts
But sometimes a girl’s gotta put herself first

Without You, My Home
is Just a House

[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

Deep as the sea is my sorrow
Wide as they sky is your smile
I’d give up all that I asked for
If I could hold you for a while

Dark as the night is my sadness
Bright as the sun are your eyes
My heart comes up empty,
where once there was plenty
I can’t fill it up, so I cry

Without you, my home is only a house
And nobody lives here but my sad, sad heart
If I can’t have you
I don’t want nobody else
Without you, my home is just a house

My arms are so lonely without you
My dreams they don’t know where to land
I could regain my direction
If only I could hold your hand

The day that you left me, my darling
was the day that the sun never shined
I could make my way in the darkness
If I could have your heart in mine

I’ve got my home in the country
I’ve got my white picket fence
If my house can’t have you in it
living here don’t make any sense

Stay With Me Tonight
[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

Sorrow, Lord sorrow
Take it all away from me tomorrow
Today, I’m okay
I will walk and I will pray
And I’ll be alright
If you stay with me tonight

Crying, oh yeah I’m crying
Can’t see the river for to cross,
even though I’m trying
There are mountains in my way
I can’t go, but I won’t stay
And I’ll be alright
If you stay with me tonight

Lonely, Lord I’m so lonely
Try to find you in the dark,
but it’s me only
The curtains are all open
And I’m wishing and I’m hoping
That I’ll be alright
If you stay with me tonight

Today I miss you
Skies would shine brighter
If only I could kiss you
Soon I will smile
It may take a little while
And I’ll be alright
If you stay with me tonight

Sorrow, Lord sorrow
Take it all away from me tomorrow
Soon I will smile
It may take a little while
And I’ll be alright
If you stay with me tonight
Stay with me tonight
Stay with me tonight

I’m Satisfied
[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

I’m satisfied, I’m satisfied
I’m satisfied, but if you ask me
I’ll admit it, I could use some company

Places to go, I’ve got places to go
And people to see, but what I don’t have
I’ll admit it, Is someone to go with me

In this world, some things I see
Make me as sad as I can be
At the end of the day, I’ll be okay
I’ll be happy anyway
Because I’m satisfied with me

Mornings will come, And mornings will go
They’re coming and they’re going,
without me ever knowing
How it feels to have someone

When the Water Calls
[listen]

music and lyrics by Marion Walsh

She heard the river calling
Of a Sunday afternoon
She got up from the table
And she knew just want to do
She jumped into the water
Summer dress and all
She said “you’ve got to get wet
when the water calls.”

Way across the river
Where the magic passes through
I saw her in the water
And I tried to go in too
I put one toe in the water
And I turned right back around
My feet feel better when
they’re on the ground

When the water calls,
If the water calls
And you answer,
She’ll take you home
When the water calls,
If the water calls,
And you answer,
She’ll dance you home

Me, I don’t like swimming
I never do get wet
And if the water’s calling me
I have not heard her yet
But take me to the desert
That’s where I hear my song
That’s where I’ve done
my dancing all along

Some folks like the water
Some folks like the land
Others like the great indoors
It’s what they understand
Whatever blows your hair back
You’ve got to let it blow
Just make sure you’re dancing
when you go
